The Redhouse River Mile
The 2011 SPAR Redhouse River Mile, Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, will take place over the weekend of 27 February 2011.
Venue is yet to be determined.
“Not only the oldest, but still growing in stature with increasing entry numbers year after year, the Redhouse River Mile has proved to be one of the premium open water events on the domestic open water swimming calendar".
There’s no doubt that this year’s event will live up to expectations and continue to grow as well as a supported recreational open water swimming event, says Thian de Jager president of Eastern Province Aquatics.

Other local Open Water Swimming Events
The Marina Mile
Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay has hosted open water swim events since the early 1990's following the vision of the Buchner family, who developed the canals, to create this into a water sports mecca in the Eastern Cape.
Kouga Swim Club coach and open water swimmer, Brenton
Williams was one of the first locals to start swimming in the canals and in 2002 he resurrected the Marina Mile.
The Mile has grown into a multiple swim extravaganza with 2010 being the biggest year ever as the event stretches into two days. 22 Dec will see South Africa's hard core open water swimmers tackle a 25K in the canals with a 10K “sprint” event taking place later in the day.
23rd December will see a 5K and a 3K take to the water, with the traditional bank to bank and 500m swims taking place before the Women's and Men's Steers Marina Mile. Steers Jeffreys Bay is the title sponsor of the Mile with owner Breyten De Beer being a keen open water swimmer himself.

The Ocean Racing Series
Started in January 2006, the Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing
Series
is one of the largest beachfront events in Africa and is unique to Nelson
Mandela Bay, Africa's water sport capital.
OPEN TO ALL, the Series offers an opportunity for open water swimmers, fun
runners, walkers and ocean paddlers to come together on a fortnightly basis
to take part in a world class fun event - without the requirement of
expensive equipment or specialist skills.
Come join thousands of like minded people during Season 6. Race days are
held on alternate Sunday mornings from November through to April 2010.

The Midmar Mile
The Midmar Mile held at the Midmar Dam north of Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal is the world’s largest open water swimming event.
The Midmar Mile draws thousands of competitors each year, both serious international athletes and Olympic medallists to recreational swimmers.
The Midmar Mile swim gains its name from its location, The Midmar Dam and its distance (+ / - one mile).
An unique feature of the race is that while the distance covered is always a mile, depending on rainfall and the water levels in the dam, the distance swum varies from year to year. In years with poor rainfall, competitors are subject to the infamous Midmar sprint start, a bedlam of bodies sprinting across the muddy lake-shore and through the shallows until the water is deep enough to swim.

An Interesting Story
1) Why did you decide to
enter the British Gas Great North Swim?
I was watching the news and saw a clip of the 2008
Great North Swim – I knew in that instant that I would
be doing it the next year. I called my dad Bill and
asked him to put the news on and he managed to catch a
moment of it. I then suggested that we do it together
and I could tell that it had caught his imagination.
Although he is 86-years-old, I thought it would be
within his capabilities as he is a regular swimmer and
has a sense of adventure.
Earlier that year, we had lost my mum Pat to
Parkinson’s Disease. Both of us did a lot of swimming in
the following months to help us with our grief. We also
found it helpful chatting to people at our local pool,
and in fact it was there that I met my partner Ronnie! I
think dad and I needed something to motivate us and look
forward to in the future and once we had decided to do
the Great North Swim, it gave us something to plan and
practice for.
