Roux remains unbeaten

Pristine conditions greeted competitors and spectators alike at the 4th race in of the EP OWSS which was held at Marina Martinique on Sunday.  Numbers were down due to the half Iron Man being held in East London but this did not detract from Jessica Roux extending her dominance in the 5 K swim.

Roux has won every race she has participated in this season and is looking forward to pitting her skills against the other top 5 K women swimmers in South Africa at the SA Swim Champs in April. Brenton Williams won the 5 K men’s race.

Jonathan Roux won the 3 K men’s event while Chrislie-Thandi Niehaus took the honours in the women’s race. JC Van Wyk, from Jeffreys Bay had a good swim to win the 41 -50 yrs race and Francis Searle from Humansdorp won the O/50 division. Up and coming open water swimmer Seth De Swart (10yrs) completed his second 3 K swim and won the boys U/14 division.

The honours in the 1 K swim went to Dominic Greeff and Tammy Geyer respectively. Caro De Jager and Danie Ellis (both from Jeffreys Bay) won the U/14 divisions.

Due to the popular nature of the bank to bank swim at the Marina Mile, this event was again held on Sunday. 8 brave young swimmers took to the water to much encouragement from the spectators. Matthew Roux swam well to win the race from Andre Smit who just managed to beat his brother Johan Smit. Claudia Zoetmulder won the girl’s race from Genevieve Joubert and Abigail Janse van Rensburg. Abigail is just 3 years old and is only starting swim lessons this week, underlying her potential as a future star in open water swimming. Johnny Malgas won the 5 K beach run, an event that is sure to grow in popularity.

Open water swim action swings to Port Elizabeth this weekend for the 8th race in the Axxess DSL Ocean racing Series to be held at Hobie beach. Competitors can choose between a 1 K or a 3 K swim and more than 500 participants are expected to enter and registrations close at 08H30.

Jeffreys Bay will host the inaugural Eastern Province Open Water Swim Champs on the 30/31 January. Saturday will see a 10 K and a 3 K swim take place together with a 500 m swim. The 5 K, 1 K and bank to bank swims will take place on Sunday. Swimmers from East London have already confirmed their entries and participants from other provinces are also expected to enter this week.
