Keen action at Marina Marinique
65 year old Elsa Craig was the star of the 2nd round of the EPA Swim Challenge Series held at Marina Martinique over the weekend. Craig, swimming in the Cirrus 3km swim finished in a time of 57min 40sec which is within the SA colours qualifying time for swimmers 60 years and over.
Craig is also the local representative for Masters swimming in the Eastern Cape, having represented South Africa on numberous occassions for masters swimming. 
The strength and depth of Masters swimming in the region was evident over the weekend with almost half the field comprising of Masters swimmers. Leading the charge was JC van Wyk with a great win in the Jeffreys Bay News 5km event in the over 40 age group whilst Russell Tucker and Glenda-Lee Thomas won the over 50 age group category.
Brenton Williams rounded off a busy weekend with a 3rd in the Insight Properties 10km swim and then going on to win the Cirrus 3km swim from Denise Bosman (1st lady). In the Training Edge 1km swim it was 13 year old Tarryn Els winning in a time of 14min 29sec from Caro de Jager and Ian Venter. Local swimmers Danie and Pieter Ellis dominated the kids 500m race.
Round 2 also saw the first 10km open water swim of the season with Michael Marais, the reigning EP 10km champion, having a comfortable win in the Insight Properties 10km swim in a time of 2hrs 14min.
Rebecca Newman claimed the ladies race in 2hrs 30min whilst Kouga swim coach, Brenton Williams, was the first masters swimmer in 2hrs 57min. 
Chris van de Sande continued his dominance with an easy win in the Jeffreys Bay News 5km swim race ahead of Hanre Barnard and ladies winner Jamie-Lee Schlemmer.
In the Training Edge 1km swim it was 13 year old Tarryn Els winning in a time of 14min 29sec from Caro de Jager and Ian Venter. Local swimmers Danie and Pieter Ellis dominated the kids 500m race.
The next round of the EPA Swim Challenge Series in Marina Martinique will be over the weekend 27/28 November 2010.
