Gamiet claims 9 gold medals as SA’s young swim stars are No 1 in Africa
Western Province swim sensation Zaahir Gamiet
finished up with nine gold medals as SA’s rising swim talent dominated
on final day of the 8th African Junior Championships held in Mauritius
yesterday.
Gamiet was involved in setting two new Championship marks during the
final session of the event – in clocking 54.72 in the 100 metres
freestyle before joining Hardus Louw, Craig Emslie and Matthew Bowers,
in finishing the 4 x 100 metres medley in 4: 10.69, both in the 12-14
years age group. Yesterday’s races apart, Gamiet’s golden wave of
success at the championship consisted of triumphs in the 100 metres
butterfly, 50 metres freestyle, 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay, 50
metres butterfly, 100 metres backstroke, 200 metres freestyle and 50
metres backstroke.
Jessica Liss collected four gold medals at the four-day gala, in setting
a Championship best of 34.01 in the 50 metres breaststroke final (12 to
14 years age group).
During the Championships, KwaZulu Natal’s Murray McDougal made five
trips to the medal podium to collect gold. On the final day, he set a
championship record time of 57.18 in the 100 metres backstroke (15-16
years age group) before joining Fabian Ruszcynski, Heinrich Alberts,
Brett Walsh in setting a championship record time of 3:56.89 in the 4 x
100 metres medley relay.
The SA team finished the championships at the top of the medal standings
with 50 gold medals, 25 silver and 23 bronze. In reaction to the
performances, Swimming SA CEO Shaun Adriaanse said: “On behalf of
Swimming SA, I wish to congratulate the swimmers on their achievements
and trust that the experience gained will stand them in good stead as
far as taking their respective swimming careers to the next level.”

The Executive Committee, Coaches, Swimmers and
Parents wishes to congratulate
Lorraine Deasy on being crowned Administrator of the Year 2009 at a
function that was held in Durban at the opening leg of the FINA/Arena
Swimming World Cup on Thursday, 15 October 2009.
In addition she has also been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by
Swimming South Africa.
Well done, an award well deserved!

Awards Nominations
Congratulations to Lorraine Deasy who has been
nominated as Administrator of the Year
together
with Werner Els, Tony Ferguson, Anton Jordaan and Wayne Riddin. She has
been involved in Eastern Province swimming for more than 30 years.
This year she has attended her 30th senior nationals as an official and
has fulfilled various functions on the Eastern Province Executive over
the past years.

In addition she has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by
Swimming South Africa.
Eastern Province Aquatics also wishes Kevin Paul all the best, he has
been nominated in the category Disabled Swimmer of the Year.
